Maternity hospitals or more commonly maternity wards are hospitals or sections in hospitals that provide care to women during pregnancy, after pregnancy and during giving birth. Usually they are attached to a hospital and are sections that provide natal care facilities and childbirth services. Care given to women who are pregnant is called pre-natal care while that given after giving birth is called ante-natal care.
Pre-natal care is especially important in the last two trimesters of the pregnancy days; these are the last six months of a pregnancy. During the last two trimesters, a pregnancy is delicate and to ensure that the baby is well taken care of, medical services may be sought. There are generally two kinds of delivery; natural birth: this is where the baby comes out through the cervix and secondly, caesarean section: where the baby has to be removed surgically from the womb.
The care givers present in maternity hospitals are:
• Doctors, general practitioners who handle general medical issues.
• There are obstetricians who are specialists in the obstetrics, which is the medical department that deals with childbirth and care of new mothers.
• There are gynaecologists who specialise in the department of women health and female diseases. In most cases, the specialists will be an ob-gyn who is a medic specializing in both obstetrics and gynaecology. They will also have undergone surgical training allowing them to undertake surgery where it falls within the scope of their practice.
• There are nurses, and there may be midwives present; nurses are trained in caring for medical patients and midwives are women specially trained in delivering babies and caring for women who are giving birth
• Anaesthetist, who administer anaesthesia in case of surgical operations.
In terms of medical equipment present in hospital maternities, there will be medical equipment for undertaking surgical procedures that are performed there such as caesarean sections. There are incubators for premature born babies. Hospital maternities will be divided into several sections; first are the general wards where women who have given birth or are waiting to do so are accommodated. Secondly, there are delivery rooms where giving birth is undertaken. Thirdly, there are surgery rooms where caesarean sections are performed.
